An AC failure in a Phoenix summer is a safety problem, not an inconvenience. Maricopa County’s 2024 heat death report found that 88% of people who died of heat indoors had an AC unit, and 70% of those units weren’t working. This page does one job: tell you who actually picks up at 2 a.m., what after-hours service costs, and whether your problem can safely wait until morning. If your AC still runs and you’re shopping for a tune-up or replacement, use our best AC repair companies in Phoenix guide instead.

Call now or wait for morning?

After-hours calls cost more. Some failures can’t wait, and some can. Knowing the difference saves money:

Situation What to do
Elderly people, infants, pets or anyone medically fragile at home, and the indoor temperature is rising Call now, and move them somewhere cool
Burning smell, sparking at the unit, or a breaker that keeps tripping Shut the system off at the thermostat and breaker, then call now
Water pouring from the air handler or a ceiling stain spreading Turn the AC off and call now; a company that also does plumbing helps here
Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil Turn cooling off, run the fan only, and book the first slot in the morning
AC running but weak late at night, house holding in the low 80s, healthy adults only Usually safe to wait for a regular-hours appointment and skip the after-hours rate

Its $19-a-month Smart Sadie membership adds priority emergency scheduling and 10% off repairs, which is worth knowing if you’re in an older house that fails every July.

2. Chas Roberts AC & Plumbing

9828 N 19th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85021 · Emergency line (602) 386-2732 · ROC 019133, 069769, 277496, 073706

In the Valley since 1942. Chas Roberts’ emergency page says weekend and holiday emergency service costs nothing extra, and its $85 emergency assessment fee is waived if you go ahead with the repair. Its Google listing shows office hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; use the emergency line above for overnight calls.

Best for: weekend and holiday breakdowns, when other companies add a premium.

3. Wolfgang’s Cooling, Heating & Plumbing

2441 W Erie Dr, Tempe, AZ 85282 · (480) 582-1810 · ROC 347151 (HVAC), 347152 (plumbing) · Open 24 hours

Serving the Valley since 1982. Wolfgang’s 24-hour emergency page says its Tempe location charges no extra for weekend or after-hours service, residential or commercial. That’s the rarest promise on this list, and it makes Wolfgang’s the first call if you’re in Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Ahwatukee or Scottsdale.

Best for: East Valley nights when you don’t want an after-hours surcharge.

4. Emergency Air Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

4330 W Chandler Blvd #1, Chandler, AZ 85226 · (602) 529-4407 · ROC 347932, 329654, 365945 · Open 24 hours

Best for: north Phoenix and the I-17 corridor, plus homes that also need a plumber.

5. Morehart Air Conditioning & Heating

8853 N 78th Ave, Peoria, AZ 85345 · (602) 640-0444 · ROC 280802 · Open 24 hours

A family-owned West Valley company whose emergency page says its team is available 24/7, even though its office keeps weekday hours. Morehart quotes free estimates on replacements and upfront pricing on repairs.

Best for: Peoria, Glendale and west Phoenix.

6. Rainforest Plumbing & Air

19820 N 7th St, Ste 230-204, Phoenix, AZ 85024 · (480) 359-3664 · HVAC license 246108, plumbing license 151803 (as listed on its site) · Open 24 hours

Offers 24/7 emergency AC repair across Maricopa County and parts of Pinal County, with upfront quotes before work starts and a one-year guarantee. Members of its Cabana Club plan pay no after-hours or holiday fees. Because it’s also a plumbing company, it’s a smart call when the “AC problem” is a condensate line flooding the hallway.

Best for: leaks from the air handler, and north Phoenix.

⭐ Can it wait until morning? East Valley pick: Steve’s Ultimate Air · Chandler · (480) 458-7287

3215 N Arizona Ave #B9, Chandler, AZ 85225 · ROC 267871. Serving the Valley since 2010, open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and Saturday mornings. It doesn’t advertise 24/7 service, so it isn’t on the list above, but if your system limps through the night in Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe or Mesa, it’s the shop in our directory for a daytime repair. It’s also our pick in the best AC repair in Chandler guide.

💡 How we picked

Every company had to pass four checks before it was considered: it’s operating, its phone and address are real, it holds the license its trade requires, and its reviews hold up when read in context. Passing companies were then scored out of 100: reputation and track record over the last 24 months (25), credentials and licensing (20), customer handling (15), pricing transparency (15), Arizona roots and longevity (15) and Arizona-specific expertise (10). Ties go to more years in Arizona. For this page, a company also had to state 24/7 emergency service on its own website.

⚡ AZ INSIDER TIP

Ask two questions before you book an after-hours visit: “Is there an after-hours surcharge?” and “Is the service fee waived if I do the repair?” On this list, Wolfgang’s says no to the first and Chas Roberts says yes to the second. And if the unit is old enough that you’re weighing a replacement anyway, get the quote in daylight, when you aren’t sweating through a 95° hallway.

Phoenix heat checklist while you wait for the tech

  • Get vulnerable people out first. Elderly family, infants and pets go to a relative, a hotel or a county cooling site. Call 2-1-1 or check Maricopa County’s heat page for the Heat Relief Network map; many sites close after September 30, so call to confirm.
  • Shut off the AC if it’s frozen, sparking or leaking. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, the most expensive part to replace.
  • Close blinds and skip heat sources. No oven or dryer; run fans and take cool showers.
  • Drink water before you’re thirsty. In a hot house you fall behind fast.
  • After a monsoon storm, look at the outdoor unit. Haboob dust and debris can choke the condenser coil. If the storm put water inside, see our Phoenix water damage restoration companies.

Renting? What Arizona law says about a broken AC

✅ Cooling is an essential service in Arizona rentals

Under A.R.S. § 33-1364, a landlord who deliberately or negligently fails to provide reasonable air conditioning or cooling, where units are installed, is in breach. After you give the landlord reasonable written notice of the problem, you can recover damages for the reduced rental value of the unit, or move into reasonable substitute housing with rent excused for that period.

The statute does not let a tenant repair the AC and deduct the cost from rent, so don’t hire a company on the landlord’s behalf without talking to a lawyer or tenant-rights group first. This is a summary of the statute, not legal advice.

Is a broken AC an emergency in Arizona?

In hot weather it often is. Maricopa County’s 2024 heat death report found that 88% of indoor heat deaths happened in homes with an AC unit, and 70% of those units weren’t working. Burning smells, repeated breaker trips and active water leaks are call-now problems in any season.

Does my landlord have to fix my AC in Arizona?

Yes. A.R.S. § 33-1364 treats air conditioning or cooling as an essential service where units are installed. After reasonable written notice, a tenant can recover damages for the reduced rental value or move into substitute housing with rent excused. The statute does not allow a tenant to repair the AC and deduct the cost.

Should I run my AC if there’s ice on it?

No. Turn cooling off and run the fan only so the ice melts. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, which costs about $1,200 to $2,800 to replace.

How do I check an AC company’s license in Arizona?

Search the company name or ROC number on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website, roc.az.gov. HVAC contractors in Arizona must hold an ROC license, and the license numbers for every company on this page are listed above.
