Craigslist Phoenix is still the Valley’s biggest free classifieds board — here’s how to use it without getting burned
Craigslist Phoenix (phoenix.craigslist.org) is split into four sub-areas — Central/South Phoenix, East Valley, North Phoenix and West Valley — and nearly every category is free to post except jobs, services and dealer vehicle listings. The site itself is legitimate. The risk is the meetup.
The fix is simple: do the handoff at a police-designated safe exchange zone. Mesa (5 stations), Gilbert (2) and Surprise (1) have official, signed, camera-covered spots. Addresses and hours are below. If the other party refuses to meet at one, walk away.
I’ve lived in the Valley for 30-plus years and I’ve bought, sold and hired off Craigslist Phoenix since it was the only game in town. It has outlasted Backpage, LetGo and a dozen apps that were supposed to kill it. It still works — for used furniture, tools, cars, apartments, gigs and finding a handyman — as long as you understand how it’s organized, what it charges, and where to meet. How Craigslist Phoenix Is Organized
Craigslist runs one site for the entire Phoenix metro at phoenix.craigslist.org, then lets you filter by sub-area. Picking the right sub-area when you post is the single easiest way to get more responses — an East Valley buyer in Gilbert filters out West Valley listings in Buckeye because that’s a 90-minute round trip on the I-10.

Outside the metro, Craigslist runs separate sites you should post to directly rather than lumping into Phoenix: Tucson, Prescott, Flagstaff / Sedona, Yuma, Show Low, Sierra Vista and Mohave County. What It Costs to Post on Craigslist Phoenix
Most of the site is free. The paid categories are the ones businesses use, and that’s on purpose — the fees keep spammers from carpet-bombing the jobs and services boards.

If you run a service business, the $5 services post is one of the cheapest lead sources in the Valley. I know licensed contractors in Mesa and Chandler who repost every 48 hours (Craigslist lets you renew after 48 hours) and pull a steady stream of calls from it. Renew before 5 p.m. — that’s when people get home and start scrolling. Pair it with a proper directory listing so the leads have somewhere credible to check you out.
Police Safe Exchange Zones in the Phoenix Metro
This is the section nobody else has compiled. Several Valley police departments have designated signed, camera-covered spots — in the lobby or in a marked parking stall — specifically for online-marketplace handoffs. Officers don’t supervise the deal, but the location is recorded 24/7 and a scammer will not show up to one. I pulled every address below from the department’s own website or announcement and cross-checked it against Google Maps.

What about Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler, Glendale and Peoria? As of this update, none of those departments publish a formal, signed exchange-zone program the way Mesa, Gilbert and Surprise do. That doesn’t mean you can’t use them. Any police station lobby or front lot is a public, camera-covered space — Phoenix PD headquarters is at 620 W Washington St downtown, Tempe PD headquarters is at 120 E 5th St, and Paradise Valley PD at 6433 E Lincoln Dr actively encourages residents to meet there. The difference is that nobody has painted a stall for you. If a Chandler or Scottsdale reader knows of an official zone I’ve missed, call the number at the bottom and I’ll add it.
✅ The one rule that beats every scam
Propose the exchange zone in your first reply. Legit buyers and sellers say “sure.” Scammers suddenly have a reason they can’t make it, want to send a courier, or need you to come to them. That reaction is your answer — end the conversation.
The Craigslist Scams That Actually Hit Phoenix
National “top Craigslist scams” lists are generic. These are the ones that show up in the Valley over and over, in rough order of how often I see them.
⚠️ Rental scams — the Valley’s #1 problem
Phoenix has been one of the fastest-growing metros in the country for a decade, and scammers know renters are desperate. The pattern: a real listing is copied from Zillow or a property manager’s site, reposted on Craigslist at a lower rent, and the “owner” is conveniently out of state (missionary, military, oil rig) and needs a deposit wired before you can see it. Never send money for a unit you haven’t walked through with someone who can open the door. Look up the parcel on the Maricopa County Assessor’s site — if the owner’s name doesn’t match the person asking for money, it’s a scam.
⚠️ Car title tricks
Arizona requires the seller’s signature on the title to be notarized — that’s not a suggestion, it’s how MVD processes the transfer. A seller who says “I’ll just sign it and you handle the rest” is either uninformed or hiding a lien, a salvage brand, or a car that isn’t theirs. Meet at an MVD office or an Authorized Third Party provider, notarize on the spot, and file a Sold Notice on AZ MVD Now the same day if you’re the seller so the plate and tickets stop being your problem.
⚠️ Puppy and pet posts
Searches for “craigslist phoenix pets” are up 23% this year, and Craigslist technically bans pet sales — only rehoming with a small fee is allowed. Any “breeder” asking for a deposit to ship a French bulldog from Tucson or Yuma before you meet the animal is running the oldest scam on the board. Meet the dog. See the litter. Pay in person.
⚠️ Overpayment and “verification code” scams
A buyer sends a check for more than the asking price and asks you to refund the difference, or asks you to read back a Google Voice code “to prove you’re real.” The check bounces after you’ve refunded; the code lets them open a Google Voice number tied to your phone. Cash in person only, and never read anyone a code that was texted to you.
⚠️ Unlicensed “contractors” in the services section
Arizona’s handyman exemption allows unlicensed work only on jobs under $1,000 that don’t need a permit. Anyone quoting you a roof, a pool resurface, an AC replacement or a room addition off a Craigslist ad must hold an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license. Look them up at azroc.gov before a dollar changes hands — and know that if an unlicensed contractor walks off with your deposit, the ROC’s Residential Recovery Fund won’t cover you.
How to Sell Faster on Craigslist Phoenix
- Put the sub-area and cross-streets in the title. “Solid oak dining table — Gilbert, Val Vista & Warner” gets more clicks than “Dining table for sale” because buyers are filtering by drive time.
- Photograph in daylight, outdoors if you can. The Arizona sun is free studio lighting from 7 to 9 a.m. Midday glare washes everything out.
- Price for the season. Patio furniture and misters move in March and October, not July. Space heaters sell in December when the Valley dips into the 40s. Snowbirds unload golf carts and furniture in April before they head north.
- Say “meet at Mesa PD” or “meet at Gilbert PD” in the listing. It filters out the tire-kickers and scammers before they ever email you.
- Repost every 48 hours. Craigslist sorts by date. A three-day-old listing in the Phoenix furniture section is buried under a hundred newer ones.

Craigslist lost the casual-seller crowd to Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp years ago. It kept the categories those apps handle badly: apartments and rooms by owner, commercial and office space, gigs, skilled-trade services, and anything big enough that you want a serious local buyer rather than 40 “is this available?” messages.
