The problem is that everyone knows it. This guide is the list I actually give friends who ask, split into big-night dinners, experiences that are not dinner, and cheap dates, plus the Valentine’s 2027 calendar quirks that will catch people out. Nobody paid to be on it; see how AZ Charged picks businesses.

Date ideas that are not dinner

Sunrise hot air balloon flight with Rainbow Ryders

The once-a-year big gesture. Rainbow Ryders flies over the Valley desert at sunrise and sunset, offers private flights for two, and finishes with a toast of champagne or a non-alcoholic option after landing. They can add a custom banner or a picnic on landing for proposals and anniversaries. Flights are weather-dependent, so book a backup morning. Phoenix office: 7934 N Glen Harbor Blvd, Glendale, (480) 299-0154.

Desert Botanical Garden at dusk

Go an hour before sunset and stay until dark, when the cactus silhouettes turn black against the sky. The garden runs weekly evening programs including Thursday Sunset Socials and Friday Music in the Garden concerts, and Gertrude’s Restaurant by Tarbell’s is on site for dinner after. Adult admission currently starts at $32.95. 1201 N Galvin Pkwy, Phoenix, in Papago Park.

Japanese Friendship Garden (Ro Ho En)

A 3.5-acre stroll garden with waterfalls and koi ponds, hidden in the middle of downtown Phoenix. From February the garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and adult admission is $14. Public tea ceremonies run one Saturday a month from October through May; check the garden’s calendar for the February date. 1125 N 3rd Ave.

A spa afternoon at Joya Spa

At the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, 4949 E Lincoln Dr, Paradise Valley. A treatment gets you into the hydrotherapy circuit (steam, sauna, hot tub and cold plunge) and a terrace pool facing Camelback Mountain. Book a morning treatment so you have the afternoon by the pool. (480) 627-3020.

Mini golf and drinks at PopStroke

For a date that is more fun than formal: two putting courses, food and a full bar. Details are in our PopStroke Scottsdale guide.

Planning Valentine’s Day 2027 in Phoenix

February 14, 2027 is a Sunday, and Monday the 15th is Presidents’ Day. That turns Valentine’s into a three-day weekend for a lot of the Valley, and February is already peak snowbird and visitor season. Here is how the calendar affects the places above:

Place Sat Feb 13 Sun Feb 14 Mon Feb 15
KAI Open Closed Closed
Japanese Friendship Garden Open Open Closed
Durant’s Open from 4 p.m. Open from 4 p.m. Open from 4 p.m.
Different Pointe of View Open from 5 p.m. Open from 5 p.m. Open from 5 p.m.

Based on regular hours published in October 2026. Restaurants often change hours or run a set holiday menu for Valentine’s, and 2027 details are not out yet, so confirm when you book.

⚡ AZ INSIDER TIP

Do Valentine’s on Saturday the 13th or Monday the 15th instead of Sunday. Sunday the 14th will be the most crowded night, with set menus at set prices. Monday is a holiday for many people, and the same restaurants are far easier to book. Same view, same food, no 9:45 p.m. table.

⚠️ Book earlier than you think

February in Phoenix also brings spring training arrivals and heavy resort occupancy, and the view restaurants above only have so many window tables. Many restaurants open Valentine’s reservations a month or two ahead. Set a reminder for mid-December and book as soon as your pick opens its calendar.
